History
Habitat for
Humanity of Matthews was incorporated as a nonprofit, Christian
organization on July 10, 1989. Since that time, the affiliate has
completed communities throughout Matthews, including Fullwood Trace and
Rainbow Ridge. HFHM will complete its latest neighborhood – Sunrise
Crossing – by early 2011. Sunrise Crossing is an 18-home community
located on Matthews School Road. Thanks to the partnership between
homeowners, sponsors, and volunteers, more than 85 homes have been built
in the Matthews community to date.
Over the
past several years, HFHM and Habitat affiliates nationwide have begun
exploring innovative ways to serve more families in need. In 2007,
Habitat for Humanity of Matthews launched its first neighborhood
revitalization effort in Eastwood Forest, a subdivision located along
the boundary between Mecklenburg County and Union County. Neighborhood
revitalization focuses on stabilizing neighborhoods and creating
positive, healthy surroundings for Habitat homeowners by combining new
home construction with repair and rehabilitation initiatives.
In 2010,
Habitat Matthews will launch its latest “green” building initiative:
LEED certified home construction. HFHM has a strong background in
building quality, energy-efficient homes and the affiliate hopes to
continue to hold itself to the highest standard it can achieve to ensure
healthy, sustainable homes for the families it serves.
