Overview
How Habitat Works

-
Homeowner
families are chosen through a careful selection process typically
taking 12 to 18 months, from initial application to move-in.
-
Partnerships are formed between the Habitat families and churches,
civic clubs, schools, businesses, and municipalities that provide
funding and volunteers
-
Volunteers
and Habitat homeowners provide most of the construction labor.
Families selected must be willing to invest "sweat equity" in their
house.
-
Habitat
homeowners purchase their houses with an affordable, 30-year,
no-interest loan. (A typical monthly payment is at or under
$400, including taxes and insurance and termite inspections.)
Homeowners should have a savings account allowance of $1500 at the
time of closing.
-
Homeowner's
monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses for
deserving families, providing a hand up, not a handout.
*Habitat Matthews
currently has homeowners selected through year 2009 but we ask that you
please contact us if you are interested to get on a waiting list for the
future.
