Individual Construction

The most popular and visible of Habitat’s volunteer opportunities are construction volunteers.  Construction volunteers are continually in demand due to our ongoing building efforts. No construction experience is required, although volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Volunteers undertake dozens of home construction tasks such as dry walling, painting, tiling, siding, insulating, and framing. Volunteers are scheduled on an individual and group basis.

Construction Time

Habitat Matthews typically builds on Saturdays.  If you wish to volunteer on weekdays please visit our Non Construction page.  The typical build day begins at 8 a.m. and ends between 3 to 4 p.m.  During the Summer, the day may be cut short due to heat.

What to Bring

For safety, we recommend that volunteers wear comfortable shoes and pants instead of shorts.  If possible, bring a hammer, measuring tape, and nail apron.  If you do not have these, there should be some extras provided at the site.  We also recommend you bring water and sunscreen.

When You Arrive

When you arrive you should find the sign-in desk and turn in your Volunteer Waiver.  After that, find the house leader who will direct you to where you need to be.  Your house leader can answer any questions you may have at that time.

Please arrive no later than 8 a.m. as there will be a prayer and an information session explaining what is involved with the day's jobs and where people will be working.  It is imperative that you are in attendance for the information session.  Necessary technical information will be given at the information session.
