YOUTH VOLUNTEERING

MUMC Youth Build-8126 Chimore Lane

In 2007, the Matthews United Methodist Youth Group sponsored and built a Habitat home.  The youth, along with a few youth advisors and a small committee of adults, raised the sponsorship money and organized build days.  If you are interested in organizing a youth-sponsored home and want some ideas, here’s how the MUMC youth achieved their $50,000 goal and provided a family in need with a new home…

Fundraising

  • Collection in Church each Sunday

  • Small wooden houses sent home with each youth from Christmas to Easter for personal donations and fundraising

  • “Sold” the house in square foot sections for $25 each --each donor received a magnet with a mock-up of the house and a copy of the magnet was displayed in the Church with the name of the donor or in whose honor the donation was made

  • Youth built a playhouse in the shape of the Habitat home; build day pictures were displayed on the playhouse, as were the copies of the square foot donor magnets

Organizing

  • Led by committee of youth and youth advisors

  • Each small group was assigned a build day; youth 16 and older built, youth under 16 provided lunches

Getting To Know the Family

  • Homeowner family invited to parent/youth kick-off celebration

  • Family introduced to the Church on Easter Sunday

  • Family visited youth group once house was completed

  • Youth group donated fundraising playhouse to family at completion
